Description
This is the FTDI Basic Breakout Board from SparkFun.
It uses the Future Devices (FTDI) FT232RL integrated circuit, a USB to serial converter.
It has a USB 2.0 Mini-B 5-pin connector for the connection to the USB port on the computer and a 6-pin socket with 0.1" pin spacing for connection to the target device.
It has data transmit (red) LED, which shows when data are being sent from the computer to the target device and a receive indication (green) LED to indicate data flow from the device back to the computer.
It is powered using the host USB port's power. It can also transfer that power to the target device to which it is attached, if that device supports a connection to this device's 5V (or 3.3V) pin its the 6-pin connector.
A much more complete description, including a schematic, can be found on the SparkFun website.
The FTDI drivers may be obtained from FTDI.
